Week #9-10
Toyin Ojih Odutola (b.1985 in Ile-Ife, Nigeria; lives and works in New York, NY) is best known for her multimedia drawings and works on paper, which explore the malleability of identity and the possibilities in visual story-telling. Concerned with historical representations of black subjects in portraiture, Odutola undermines notions of blackness in her drawings by exploring what it means to look or be perceived as black, as, while drawn in black ink, not all of her subjects are of African descent.
"I’ve always been fascinated with gifs – they are these mini-films that you can replay over and over. Even excerpts from films or other media that have been incorporated into gifs are fascinating because, once they are taken out of context, their meaning changes. I’m interested in that idea, but I didn't start making them from my drawings until graduate school. I love making gifs because they are inherently self-contained. You don’t need to know anything about where they come from, or what they reference, you just experience them as they are."
Don't forget to post on instagram or your website!

Week #6
Rethinking Process and Materials
The assignments I have given you so far are all about not needing fancy art materials in order to make great art. This example is pen, marker, and crayon on an old envelope. The current situation has been about many things, but the struggle to find creativity within limitation is one I'm here for. What can you create using basic materials and a surface you may not have considered before? Don't forget to post your work and tag me if you're on Instagram!

Canada During COVID-19: A Living Archive
How will historians remember this time in history? What does your experience look like? Sound like? Feel like?
@CanadaDuringCovid: A Living Archive invites Canadians to document their experiences and creations during this unprecedented time.
This week I am inviting you to display your work using #canadaduringcovid as a way to document and share your experiences during this pandemic through your art. Create a work of art in the medium of your choice that expresses your personal experience of this time in history.

Week #2
This week we will be making drawings inspired by everyday objects. Look around you and find things that you can transform with drawing. Use whatever materials you have, pencil, pen, felt etc...and create something interesting out of the mundane! Don't forget to post your work on your Instagram page or your website. I look forward to seeing what you come up with :)
Week #1
Hello! This is where you will find your learning opportunities each week. In order for you to share them with me (and possibly with each other) you need to create a visual portfolio. I want this to be as easy for you as possible and so, with that in mind, I want you to choose a platform you are comfortable with. My suggestion is that you create an artist instagram account. This will not be a personal account but a school friendly one that allows me to see what you have been working on from home. You can share images, videos, stories and other examples of your learning. Another option would be to create a Wix website or a Weebly one like this. They are very user friendly and you can include blog posts, videos, image galleries etc...I have found that they don't work as well from a phone, you will need a computer, ipad or laptop in order to edit the site properly. I am also open to other suggestions. If you have another way you would like to share your work please let me know. Also, if you have limited access to technology, please let me know. Once you have decided on which platform to use and started an instagram page or website (or other) please share the handle or site address with me so I can see your work :) If you have any questions I will respond to emails as quickly as possible. Please do not DM me. I hope you are all keeping well and I look forward to seeing your beautiful work.
*I will also be setting up a zoom meeting if you are interested in connecting with me and each other. This could be a way to troubleshoot, have your questions answered and chat with each other.
