Week #9-10
Using a washable drawing medium (dry erase marker, lipstick, eyeliner, washable markers) trace your reflection in a mirror. You can try to press paper over the surface of the mirror to "pull a print" afterwards. In order to pull a print you use pressure to transfer the ink or other drawing material from a prepared surface (the matrix) to another surface (usually a piece of paper). Don't forget to take a picture and post for me to see!
Week #7-8
Symbolic Self-Portrait
Think about the different roles you play in everyday life: student, employee, musician, athlete, artist, sibling, gamer, etc. In addition, consider the different moods you experience on a regular basis – reflective, anxious, energetic, exhausted, etc... Next, consider how you might represent your personality through the things that you own or use.
Create a still life arrangements of objects/items that are important to you. This could include any combination of items that hold sentimental value (stuffed animals, jewelry, letters), items you use regularly (sports equipment, electronics, skateboard) and items that inspire you (camera, books, art materials). Take a photo and post on your website or Instagram page!

Week #6
Abstract Song Illustration
What song is on major rotation for you this month? (What song is getting you through this Quarantine?). Pick one. Listen to it again carefully and take some notes about what colours and shapes come to mind. How could the rhythm be conveyed with line patterns? How could the lyrics be illustrated with colour and values? Plan your composition THOUGHTFULLY. Use repetition and overlap to fill the whole page. Need some inspiration? Wassily Kandinsky composed his art based on music compositions. He had something called synesthesia which made the music that he heard visible to him. He said, “Colour is a power which directly influences the soul.” |
Week #4/5
Monotype- a drawing or painting on a smooth non absorbent surface which is then transferred onto paper. A monotype produces a completely unique print with a process that is unpredictable, expressive, painterly and totally unlike any other creative process. There are all kinds of tools and supplies for monotypes (acrylic printing plates, the Gelli plate, etc) but really any slick surface will work- even something as simple as a plastic bag!
Check out the short 'how-to' video and try it out! Don't forget to take a picture and post it for me to see. Good luck, I can't wait to see what you come up with.

Week #3
This week you are asked to draw a character (your own or one of your favourites) and insert it into an environment using forced perspective (a technique which employs optical illusion to make an object appear farther away, closer, larger or smaller than it actually is). Post it to your website or to your instagram page and tag me so I can see it!
Week #2
FROTTAGE
Frottage is a surrealist and ‘automatic’ method of art making that involves creating a rubbing of a textured surface using a pencil or other drawing material.
The technique was developed by Max Ernst in drawings made from 1925. Frottage is the French word for rubbing. Ernst was inspired by an ancient wooden floor where the grain of the planks had been accentuated by many years of scrubbing. The patterns of the graining suggested strange images to him. From 1925 he captured these by laying sheets of paper on the floor and then rubbing over them with a soft pencil. The results suggest mysterious forests peopled with bird-like creatures and Ernst published a collection of these drawings in 1926.

Using a pencil, a piece of charcoal, chalk pastel or oil pastel and your sketchbook, make your way around your house and collect at least 10 examples of frottage. You may choose to use letters, numbers, textures, shapes or a combination of elements. As with all the assignments to follow, use what you have at home and make due!
Week #1
Hello! This is where you will find your learning opportunities each week. In order for you to share them with me (and possibly with each other) you need to create a visual portfolio. I want this to be as easy for you as possible and so, with that in mind, I want you to choose a platform you are comfortable with. My suggestion is that you create an artist instagram account. This will not be a personal account but a school friendly one that allows me to see what you have been working on from home. You can share images, videos, stories and other examples of your learning. Another option would be to create a Wix website or a Weebly one like this. They are very user friendly and you can include blog posts, videos, image galleries etc...I have found that they don't work as well from a phone, you will need a computer, ipad or laptop in order to edit the site properly. I am also open to other suggestions. If you have another way you would like to share your work please let me know. Also, if you have limited access to technology, please let me know. Once you have decided on which platform to use and started an instagram page or website (or other) please share the handle or site address with me so I can see your work :) If you have any questions I will respond to emails as quickly as possible. Please do not DM me. I hope you are all keeping well and I look forward to seeing your beautiful work.
*I will also be setting up a zoom meeting if you are interested in connecting with me and each other. This could be a way to troubleshoot, have your questions answered and chat with each other.
